Unresolved Negotiations Reach Critical Stage

CN Rail Seeks Binding Arbitration to Resolve Labour Dispute

Unresolved Negotiations Reach Critical Stage

Independent Mediator To Break Impasse

MONTREAL, Sept. 09, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Following the Canada Industrial Relations Boards (CIRB) decision that does not bring the labor negotiation talks between Canadian National Railway Co (CN) and its workers to a resolution, the company has formally requested binding arbitration to address the dispute. The move comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations and a failed attempt at mediation.

Binding arbitration is a process where both parties empower a mutually agreed-upon independent mediator to make a final and binding decision on the terms of the collective agreement. In this case, the mediator would be responsible for resolving the outstanding issues that have prevented CN and its workers from reaching a deal.

CN has expressed its willingness to submit to binding arbitration since June, but the union representing its workers has been resistant to the idea. The company claims that the ongoing impasse threatens the stability of the Canadian transportation system and the economic security of its employees.
